Synopsis: Excellent dark drama about crime and punishment and particularly capital punishment. A Naval Officer and his wife try to make money by smuggling brandy from France. The story is told in flashback from the condemned cell while the murderer waits to be hanged. There is an interesting story connected to Derek Bentley who was the last man hanged in the UK. Christopher Craig aged 16 was convicted of murder of a policeman with Derek Bentley. Bentley did not pull the trigger but said ‘ let him have it Chris’ and Bentley was hung as Craig was under age. Craig saw this film in the cinema the afternoon of the murder and it was said at the trial the film encouraged him to violence.
